Turning an Idea into a Product IV

 

Step 4: Before the Final Kick Off

 

Now, your project proposal is agreed and you are ready to start! You finally have the chance to turn your Idea into your Product!

But, how to start?

Your next step would be, to create a project plan and get your product ready for sale within the time frame, as defined in your project proposal. Therefore, you need to discuss your idea with several departments in your company. You simply need their input to get to the next step.

Here are some examples of departments that you may need to involve:

 

Marketing department

 

You might want to discuss some important facts with your marketing department like:

- Where are the markets

- Product launch

- Marketing campaign

- Pricing

- Product name

- Competition

- Product design

As a product manager, you usually should know all these facts before you create your project proposal. Mainly, it will be important for you to lean on existing marketing mix concepts like the 4Ps of Marketing.

 

 

 

The 4Ps of marketing is one of many concepts that you can use. The 4Ps are a good, self explanatory example. What I like to do is pick out the advantages of several marketing mixes and adapt them to my product/project. For me, this is the best way to optimize my project and make it easier to plan within the calculated time frame.

 

Project Management

 

The project management is responsible for the handling of the products you need. It applies to existing products or completely new developments. The project management is responsible for creating a specification and a project plan in cooperation with you. They are another essential pieces of your vision. Projekt Management supports in multiple ways, making your work a lot of easier.

 

If you have your prospective products running through project management, it is helpful to create a firm meeting date (for example, every 1 or 2 weeks) and have a short get-together. Use these appointments to avoid upcoming problems, adjust your time frame and find out, where the problems are, where you can support and where you can push your project by using alternative ways.

 

Product Management

 

Be clever and ask other Product Managers in your company. You will be surprised how they can help you optimize your project before you start anything. Take advantage of modularity, existing products, and particularly successful marketing channels in order to not do everything all over again.

 

Other departments

 

There are a lot of other departments you can involve if you want to make sure that your project runs smoothly, like for example sales department innovation groups, etc.

 

It will also become clear which departments are important for you during the runtime of your project, so do not waste time and energy too much, always stay flexible!
