Luxembourg converts waste collection system under usage of MAWIS

As one of the countries that began relatively early to address the issues of environmental protection, recycling and waste prevention, Luxembourg has been using new technologies in the area of waste MAWIS boardcomputer with application.jpgdisposal since the 1990s. In the municipalities of Esch, Sanem and Mondercange, for example, bins and vehicles were equipped with identification technology. The data thereby collected is used by the respective waste management contractor or municipal administration to correctly charge the residents.

Following a multi-year trial period, Luxembourg City’s waste disposal service has been updated by embracing MOBA’s bin identification system. With MAWIS (MOBA AutomaticWaste Identification System) the bin is identified by a unique code via a transponder chip assembled at the standard waste bin. This pay as you throw system allows the municipality to increase the motivation of people in the administration district to separate the waste. The MAWIS bin identification system can easy be extended by an dynamic weighing system. All components are equipped with CleANopen interface which guaranteed a maximum of compatibility to other components at the RCV (Refuse Collecting Vehicle) Embedded in a smart waste collection logistics the MAWIS support the reduction of residual waste and increase the reusable material. With accurate data collection, the local authority and waste collection company are able to optimize the whole process of waste collection and recycling. The MAWIS is a reliable and tamper-proof bin identification system certified by BSI (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik) and operational more than 20 years over the whole Europe.

Ville de Luxemburg/ Service d’hygiène. Management selected the MAWIS system from MOBA. ""We are very satisfied with the system. During the trial period, it proved to be very reliable and there are no compatibility issues with our data management system"", reports Jean-Claude Federspiel, IT director of the municipal waste management provider Ville de Luxemburg/Service d’hygiène.

23 vehicles were equipped with MOBA RFID technology. In addition, 31,000 waste bins were retrofitted with transponders. The MAWIS system is currently undergoing a three month trial and go into active operation in January. At the start of 2015, the waste bins of 104,000 residents in nearly 62,000 households will then be automatically identified during emptying and the data will be recorded and stored via an on-board computer. The collected data will be transmitted by means of WiFi to the administrative center where it will be fed via an interface into the Q-Soft software program. After processing the information in Q-Soft, the customer billing data is transferred to SAP.

By identifying and linking the individual waste bins to the respective households and bill-payers, the residents can be invoiced for the actual service disposed of.

What is special about this project is that the city has access to a WiFi network. And we use this to transmit the data that is collected during waste disposal journeys. The advantage for the city is that it saves costs. Because the WiFi network already exists, no further expense is incurred for data transmission.
