Differences of 2D and 3D excavator control systems

Today we would like to explain the main difference between a 2D and 3D excavator control system. It depends on what you try to achieve with your excavator control system if 2D works for you or if 3D would be the better solution.

2D: If you simply like to know how far down, how far out, the slope and you will use a stake or perhaps laser as reference, 2D is most likely the choice you will go with. With 2D you will have to stake out the construction site.

Excavation depth and distance (possible with 2D):

Slope (possible with 2D):

3D: In order to work in a 3D space you need to know the position and direction of the machine. This requires satellite positioning (GPS/GNSS) and depending on the system you need one or two satellite antennas. This will enable you to not to have to stake out the construction site. Depending on the system you can upload a DTM (Digital Terrain Model) which will give you the design you will excavate. For cost reasons there are systems which have some 3D functionality but not all. 2D systems are significantly less costly due to much fewer system components and limited functionality versus a 3D system with very extended functionality.

Please add to this what other features you see relevant if it comes to choosing between a 2D or 3D excavator control system.
