Ammann Paving Campus – how to build better roads

As a technology leader, we are constantly on the verge of developing new innovative products that provide faster, more precise and excellent paving results. One example is the MOBA Big Sonic Ski that has been proven to be a superior product for paving for many years now. Machine Automation is changing more and more the way of how roads are paved and the need for training paving crews accordingly.

I like to work closely together with our customers. I am involved in new specifications, install machines and provide training classes for our leveling systems.

Therefore, I was also involved in in-house training classes at the Ammann Paving Campus. I train employees in small groups, and set up pavers with MOBA’s grade control system on the spot. I explain the characteristics of asphalt and emphasize on what really matters in asphalt paving. During a live demonstration, I explain the system, the individual sensors like the slope sensor and Big Sonic Ski and give insights on what sensor to use for what application.

I always get lots of questions, like:

What is needed for a leveling system?

A leveling system supports employees at the screed during the paving process, automates the material flow and slope value, creates road smoothness and controls asphalt layer thickness. Because asphalt material is particularly expensive, the material thickness can have a huge impact on cost and quality.

What role does the screed on the paver play?

The screed is the “heart” of each paver. It doesn’t matter if it is an extending screed with various parts or a standard screed. The mixed material is evenly distributed over the entire paving width and compressed. Its own weight and the compressor units of the screed should provide the best possible pre-compression, so that different paving thickness plays a minor role for the compaction measurement at the final density. Best results are achieved if the paver reaches a pre-compaction of 80% -85%.

Extreme conditions like vibration at the screed put enormous stress on sensors and HMIs. The MOBA sensors, controllers and HMIs are not only protected against vibration, but also shielded from heat, rain and dust, using specific potting compound.
