Conflict Resolution: You're turning your phone off...to talk to me?

MOBA US had a guest speaker. She spoke on the topic of Conflict Resolution. A skill so challenging, doubtful many ""master"" to perfection over the course of a lifetime.

I am sharing ONE of the many impactful take away's from this training session... a tool guaranteed to be effective and highly successful, no matter who you are or where you work... anywhere in the world. It goes like this...

When meeting with someone to attempt to resolve a conflict: STOP everything else you are doing. Look the person in the eye, bringing to the their attention that you are turning off your phone in order to give them your undivided attention. Again... STOP everything else you are doing. Look the person in the eye, bringing to their attention that you are turning off your phone in order to give them your undivided attention.

What message did you just send? You just ""showed"" that person, that he or she, is so important, that you just shut out the rest of the world to engage in conversation with them. Through this simple action, the reaction you get should be amazing. In fact, you may even hear something to the effect of... ""Oh no, don't turn your phone off...this conversation isn't THAT important"".

Oh yes it is...little do they know, you haven't even begun the conversation but you've just won over the person you are having it with, because you gave them your undivided attention and made them feel like they, and the topic at hand are of the utmost importance to you. An action so simple, with a result so powerful.

Are you willing to try it? What's your prediction on the outcome? Name some ways in which you can make conflict resolution a win-win, every time.
