How important is Compaction to you?

Compaction systems are around for quite a while now but never have really fully taken off in the past. What is the reason? What is your take on entry-level systems for pass-counting?

There are several FHWA projects carried out in the US for Intelligent Compaction right now. This applies to both HMA and subgrades. Interest seems to increase and benefits of compaction systems are acknowledged from a wider audience.

Several industry experts gave us their opinion on compaction. Here is a summary:

  • A very well designed asphalt mixture will fail if degree of compaction is not achieved
  • Inadequate or over-compaction will shorten the lifespan of pavement
  • Compaction controls the production and profitability on an asphalt paving job
  • Bonus for smoothness and density can be jeopardized without proper compaction
  • Intelligent Compaction systems measure the stiffness of the material being laid
  • Stiffness is a reflection of the level of compaction of in place pavement structure at an extended depth, which is a function of the setting of the roller vibrations and also the weight of the roller

  • IC systems need a well-trained crew
  • IC systems are very expensive and may not be feasible for every job
