Optical bonding

Optical Bonding

Optical bonding refers to a protective glass, glued in front of a display to enhance its readability.

Especially in rough invironments like road construction, mining or crane applications a optical bonded display is indispensable. Using a standard display in these environments, can cause a lot of problems:

The most common one is condensation, which arises on the inner surface of the display. Another factor is the reflection of sunlight, which causes a mirror-image on the display. Both problems can be solved by using optical bonding.

Requirements of the Display

In partnership with one of our customers we have taken on the challenge of Optical Bonding

Many mobile telephone companies already use displays that were developed, driven by the optical bonding principle. So MOBA developers thought that what has worked for the mobile phone industry for years must surely be adaptable into the displays of MOBA.

This special bonding material needed to withstand the mostly harsh enviornment of the construction site. Through the collaboration with the customer, a list of criteria was quickly made for this special material:

- Suitable for large range of temperatures as well as temperature deviation to prevent fogging (-40°to +176°)

- Adequate glue – properties to ensure a strong adhesion between the glass and the display

- Water resistant to protect the technology

- Elastic properties in order to absorb the constant vibrations from the machine

- Able to withstand UV rays to prevent the yellowing from the sunlight

The Bonding of the Display

Before the display and front glass are able to be glued with this liquid bonding material, all the individual components need to be extensively cleaned. Subsequently, the display is sealed off entirely around to prevent a leakage of the bonding material. After this hardens, the liquid bonding material is simply spread over the display and finally the glass piece is set on top to float on the surface of the still fluid material.

During this process it’s imperative that no air bubbles become locked in the material. The process is done in a clean-room. This is the only way to assure that no dust or dirt particles become locked in the bonding material and that perfect results are yielded in the binding of the anti-glare glass and the display.

Optional Features

We offer the fused display as an option for the many color graphics that MOBA uses. Your choice between the new optical bonding display and the traditional built display depends on your application requirements.

At-A-Glance Features

Better contrast and readability

By eliminating the air gap between the TFT and the glass sheet, light reflection is significantly reduced, therefore the contrast and viewing angle is increased.

No fogging due to condensation

Because of the withdrawal of this air gap, no humidity is able to enter and condensate on the glass.

High Vibration and Shock Resistance

The endurance elastic bonding material is particularly resistant against mechanical stress and protects the display against harmful vibrations and shock.
