Decision-making results in beliefs or actions taken based on a variety of alternatives to choose from. Whether you have the title of Manager in your job description, or not. Technically speaking, you are a manager of decision-making.
Much of our decision-making capabilities stem from the way in which we were "taught" to make decisions as a child. Cognitively, we very much imitate what we saw as a child, and our reactions seem to coincide. Some are quick to make decisions, others slow. Is the rapid rate decision-maker, operating at that speed because in their mind it makes them feel better to check off the list...done... and move on? This person may appear to have it all together, but are the decisions they make, necessarily good one's? Does the person who takes longer to make a decision, fear the outcome will not be favorable if done so, quickly? This person may think so, but the opposite could be true. The result could be the same, if not even better if their decision was made faster.
In addition, there is analysis paralysis, based on information overload, inhibiting one's ability to make a decision at all. Rational and irrational decision-making is REAL. However, everyone ""thinks"" they make decisions, rationally. The same goes for Logical and Illogical decision-making. Everyone "thinks" they make decisions, logically. The mind is complex. If every person thinks in his or her mind that their decision-making is rational and logical, then why are there so many problems? The answer is simple in word, yet complicated to explain in theory. Everyone's genetic make up is different, as well as the environment in which each were raised.... all having an impact on decision-making.
However, there is a structural approach that can be used to aid in decision-making. It eliminates at least a small portion of the "emotional" element. which tends to become a bigger part of the equation to decision-making, than experts would like.
This equation goes as such, A+B= C. Ever seen this equation before? Of course. We all have. The Situation of A, combined with the Reaction, referred to as B, results in decision, C.This equation only works under one circumstance.... if one strictly goes on FACT from the Situation presented, NOT opinion. The key is to become aware of how you react to situations, resulting in comfort with your decisions. It is in this state of mind, you live with no regret, and consequence of reaction transpires in to positive decision-making.
Take a few days, making a conscious decision to practice the equation, A+B=C. You should find that the more you practice, the easier it becomes to make clear, rational and logical decisions. There is no such thing as Perfect. However, this is a case of where, "Practice makes Perfect".
Are you willing to give it a try?
